J. Backus of Saginaw has sold the interest of Backus Brothers, in the mill and lumbering industry of the Ducey & Backus Lumber Co., to Mr. Ducey. [Duncan Cameron worked for Ducey]

Patrick Ducey, Lumberman on this 1884 State of Michigan census.  Here in Detroit in 1900.

From a newspaper article in upstate New York:

According to Franklin County property records, Patrick Ducey had purchased timberland in 1881 before Hurd bought his holdings. It was Patrick Ducey and his partner, John Backus, who built the Buck Mountain logging business, creating the lumbering village of Brandon. According to local lore, Ducey cautioned people who came to work for him not to purchase land because he, Ducey, would pull out once the timber was harvested, and his employees would be left with no way to make a living. Joseph LaMora, the "Black Joe" to whom the piece refers, was not connected with John Hurd's enterprises but rather with Patrick Ducey's.

Patrick Ducey died in Detroit in 1903.

Checked the Cleveland Necrology file online; there were a few hits, but nothing definitive in my estimation.  

Wish I would have recorded the date of the deed -- would have helped narrow the time frame when searching census records at FamilySearch.  Other deeds I've extracted in Roscommon County place the date, based on Liber "13," in the second half of 1894 (ish).  

This family tree has a Maria Hart and also mentions Roscommon, Michigan.  [As a side note, the tree also includes Jane Hudson whose widower married a person in my (very) extended family tree]  My extended family tree also includes William  and Mary Jane Johnston (the Grantors); my great-grandmother, Anna Cameron Johnston Cameron, would have been their sister-in-law.

Using the other deeds I've extracted from the county records did help narrow down the search, but there are still too many Mira/Mary/Marie Harts listed for me to identify the Mrs. Hart who was the Grantee.  Roscommon County may not have been the primary residence of Mrs. Hart after she purchased the property.

I think this was my great-grandmother, Anna (Cameron) Johnston Cameron, who sold the property, but am not sure.  If she and/or John purchased property in Arenac County, Michigan (where they were living when John died) during the same approximate time frame (January 1892), that might bolster the case for identifying Anna and John Johnston as the sellers.  Their daughter, Isabelle Johnston, was born in Roscommon County in July 1890; daughter Blanche was born in Arenac County in July 1895.  In addition, I'd like to see the deed where they purchased (or inherited) the property.  Need another look at the deed to get the exact description.

From America's Successful Men Of Affairs....:
"In 1866, General Alger settled in Detroit and resumed the lumber business in the firm of Moore, Alger & Co., the moneyed men of the concern being Franklin and Stephen Moore. In the winter of 1867-68, the subject of this sketch took his wife and one child, 100 miles by sleigh into the woods to the lumber camp, and spent the Winter there in a log cabin, returning to civilization in the Spring by the same conveyance. This experience not only gave him a thorough acquaintance with the practical part of lumber operations, but a knowledge of the woods, and under his energetic and skillful direction the firm entered upon a period of satisfactory prosperity. Stephen Moore retired after a time, and his brother at a later date, the firm then taking the name of R. A. Alger & Co. As the years passed by, the business proved increasingly profitable and surplus earnings were largely devoted to purchases of eligible tracts of pine timber lands."

Annette (Henry) Alger, daughter of William and Hulda (Squier) Henry was a descendant of Wait Squier as are my grandkids.

Mrs. Jane Johnston was a candidate for sheriff in 1920, in an effort to replace her husband who was retiring.  She planned to name him (Alexander Johnston) as her deputy.  Alexander Johnston's occupation in the 1900* census taken in Roscommon Co., Michigan, was "sheriff."

Jane Johnston was elected as sheriff and her husband was her deputy.  In May, 1921, there were allegations made against Mr. Alexander Johnston and officials in Lansing recommended his removal as deputy sheriff per the Bay City Times, published on May 10, 1921.

After searching the Defiance County, Ohio, deeds recently [the Duncan Cameron family was living there when the 1870 census was taken] with negative results, I looked in my notes for some Roscommon Co., Michigan, deed extracts for the Cameron family.  Duncan & Ellen Cameron were in Roscommon County, Michigan, when the 1880 census was taken.

One deed in particular seemed interesting because the Grantors were from Cleveland, Ohio. Was there a relationship to our Camerons? Couldn’t find the first name listed (Albert Hameore?) and probably didn’t transcribe it correctly. Next was Harriet Crowl, of Cleveland, Ohio, and one of the witnesses, Samuel Crowl.

The Camerons, from Canada, dealt in lumber in Roscommon County, Michigan, so at this point it appears as though there may have been a professional connection [lumber] rather than a familial connection to the Crowls.
