Roarks And Indian Creek

An excerpt from an entry at an Ancestry.com board that described land that was held by William and Elizabeth Roark (links added):


...a plat map of William Roark's 218 acres of land on Buffalo Creek (at least part of which is in today's Marion Co. WV [or here?]) that was part of an Aug 1786 pre-emption warrant for military service.

"Monongalia County WV Records...lists: "13 Sep (17)90 William Roark to Henry Amos, of Monongalia County, 200 acres on Indian Creek in Monongalia County." I've also found reference in court records to "Roark's old mill" on Indian Creek

William's 1786 Land Warrant is described as for '400 acres on the waters of Indian Creek including his Settlement made in 1774.'

Half of this is what my ancestor Henry Amos bought. Then William and Elizabeth sold 180-1/2 acres to Charles Boyles in 1801, which looks like all or nearly all of the remaining unsold 1786 warrant land.

William also bought 100 acres on Indian Creek from Adam Geir by deed of (4) Sep. 1796. I am not 100% certain, but this looks like the tract he mortgaged to Isaac Hite Williams in July 1799. The mortgaged tract was 100 acres on which the Roarks then lived, including where his mill was located [Monongalia Co. Deeds Old Series 2:218].

My (Cathy's) Note: Through my research I found that the heirs of William Roark sold in Monongalia County (West) Virginia, on 7 October 1839 :

...certain tract or parcel of land...situate on Indian creek adjoining lands of Charles Glascock, Soloman Hougue and others it being part of a large tract of land which was granted Frederick Guice and David Scott on the 14th day of November AD 1792 and conveyed by the said Frederick Guice and David Scott...to William Roark and bounded as followeth (to wit) beginning at a white oak corner to James Arnett and running with a line of Soloman Hogue South forty three west one hundred and sixty poles in___ of the ___ and a line of Charles Glasscock thence with Glasscock or B___...
