As noted in An original paper upon early records in Cayuga County clerk's office...:

The first instrument recorded in this book is a power of attorney from Aaron Burr to Benjamin Ledyard, dated November 12, 1794, authorizing the latter to sell and convey any real property in the then Onondaga county belonging to Burr.

From the Magazine Of American History:

"In I793 the military bounty lands of New York were allotted in Onondaga County, and Major Ledyard receiving the appointment of clerk of the county, removed to the village of Aurora, and there established his office and built a cottage in which he resided with his family, and which was standing in 1843.  Here he was visited by his fellow soldiers, some of whom, among others Aaron Burr, bought lands in the neighborhood."

"Mrs. Louisa Dexter White and her sister, Emmeline, were adopted by a relative and moved to New York City.  Emmaline married Mr. Cromar, a wealthy planter who lived near Charleston, S.C.  Mr. Cromar died about 1831, during a tumultuous time in the South which was hard on Emmeline's nerves.  After Mrs. White moved to Lapeer County, Michigan, she brought her sister Emmaline with her.  In 1836 Mrs. Cromar married Morris Perry, a blacksmith; they resided in Elba until Mr. Perry's death in 1844.  In 1849 Emmaline married a Mr. Parker, with whom she moved to California.  Some years later the Parkers moved back to Lapeer, where they both died."

Fowlers In The Onondaga Grantor Index

After finding an Onondaga Co., NY, deed between Elijah and Elizabeth Richmond and Moses Fowler, there was hope that a search of the Onongada Co. Grantor Index for Fowlers would produce a deed showing that Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond inherited the property from her father (perhaps Thomas Fowler)and then granted the same to Moses Fowler (perhaps her brother).

The Onondaga Co., NY, "F" Grantor Index (1794 - 1870) did not include Thomas Fowler, so my hopes were dashed regarding the supposition above. The earliest "Fowler" grantor deed listed was 1795, although there was a Will dated 1792 listed in the index. Some of the Fowler grantors included:

*Theodosius Fowler was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati; was it this Theodosius Fowler? Also found here and here. His father was Jonathan Fowler. He was affiliated in a transaction with John Jacob Astor. A manuscript diary was kept by Capt. Theodosius Fowler regarding the Sullivan expedition.

Elijah & Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond To Moses Fowler In Onondaga Co., NY

On October 14, 1815, Elijah and Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond granted Lot #168 in the Onondaga Reservation to Moses Fowler. I was hoping that this deed, "S-4" in Onondaga Co., NY, would make it clear that Elizabeth was quit claiming inherited property to her brother, Moses Fowler, son of Thomas Fowler. However, the deed did not state that the transaction involved inherited property (parts were illegible on my copy, so it's possible that I missed something) .

It is pure speculation that Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Fowler, but it's the best I've got. Elizabeth (Fowler) & Elijah Richmond named their eldest son (who was my ancestor) Thomas; was he named after her father?

Elijah & Elizabeth Richmond were not found in the Onondaga Co., NY, Grantee Index (1794 - 1870) "N-R" alpha index, so from whom did they obtain the property and when did they possess it? The Onondaga "F-H" (for Fowler) Grantee index will be consulted; perhaps an entry for Thomas, Moses, and/or Elizabeth Fowler will help answer these questions.

Elijah & Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond also lived in Steuben Co., NY, then Livingston Co., NY, and finally, Walworth Co., Wisconsin.

There is some helpful information on this website that features Thomas & Samantha (Fowler) Clark. Perhaps Samantha was Elizabeth Fowler's sister. Elijah and Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond's youngest daughter was named Samantha.

This Indenture made this fourteenth day of October One thousand Eight hundred and fifteen Between Elijah Richmond and Elizabeth his wife of the Town and County of Onondaga of the first part and Moses Fowler of the same place of the Second part Witnessed that the said party of the first part in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part this receipt whereof is hereby conferred and acknowledged have granted, bargained sold and forever quit claimed and by their presents do grant bargain sell and forever quit claim unto the said party of the second part and to his heirs and assigns forever All that certain piece or parcel of land being part of Lot Number One hundred and Sixty Eight in the lake? Finding Elijah (But Not Edward) In The Onondaga Deeds Index

Apple at Apple's Tree has been documenting Onondaga County, New York, deeds. She sparked my interest to search for deeds involving my Richmond family in that county.

Did Edward Richmond live in Onondaga County, NY? Did he die there or Steuben County or elsewhere? I don't know. After viewing the microfilm*, I did not find Edward Richmond as a grantor. So much for the bad news. My search in Onondaga would not be complete without checking the Grantee Index. Onondaga County was formed in 1794 from Herkimer and Tioga; a check of their indexes for Richmonds is in order. (Herkimer & Tioga were formed from Montgomery Co., NY, in 1791; that would be the next place to look, and if that fails, try Albany Co.).

The great news is that I found an 1816 deed between Elijah & Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond (Grantors) and M. Fowler. Perhaps this deed will lead to the identity of Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond's parents and/or siblings. A little more bad news - it was the one entry on the whole page where the page number was faint and didn't copy completely. The whole page and that was the only one that I can't read!! It's definitely Volume/Liber "S;" the page number is two digits and the second digit is "4". Now I need a copy of Deed S-_4.

Elijah Richmond's relationship to Edward is still undetermined (son? grandson? none?); the comprehensive book about the Richmond family was flawed in respect to Elijah (my own database at Rootsweb reflects the ambiguity of Elijah's place in the Richmond family - and it's flawed, too).

Edward Richmond may have died in Steuben Co., NY, circa 1856; I know Elijah lived there, too. A search of Steuben County is in my future!

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) General Land Office (GLO) records for the property sold (E 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 17 Twn 6 Range 9) in the below listed deed indicated that the property was granted to Henry Hamblin of Ontario Co., NY, on 7/9/1839. The property appeared to be divested from the estate(s) of Ephraim* (d. 24 Oct 1856) & Abigail (Kinne) (d. 4 March 1856) Soule of Onondaga Co., New York, to their children.

The Last Will & Testament (Probate Document dated 7 Sept 1862) of W. Irving Soule is online here. The petitioner is Oscar (T or F) Soule. Brother Adelbert N. Soule is listed as are nieces, Lutie Wright and Lizzie Soule. Also nephew Frankie Soule is listed. Others mentioned are friend, Callie Matthews of Syracuse, William Wright, son of friend Dr. Elson Wright of Syracuse. Oscar Soule and Elsah L. Wright were appointed as executors.

The Alonzo Wright family was in Pasadena, California by 1900. Ermina died sometime between 1900 and 1910; Alonzo died after 1920. Daughter Lutie was a widow with a son, Irving Benton, living with her and her parents in 1900.

Oscar Soule's first wife, Mary Agnes (Laurence) died 1867. He married 2nd Miss Sarah Bradley in 1868. His surviving children were Frank C. Soule and Mrs. Charles G. Hanchett. A grandniece, Miss Nettie Swart, was with Mr. Soule and his wife when he died in California. He was also survived by a brother, Albert, of Kansas, and a sister, Mrs. A.N. Wright, of Pasadena, California. Four grandchildren also survive him: Oscar F. Soule, Oscar Soule Hanchett, Miss Agnes Laurence Hanchett and Robert G. Soule. He was the Oscar Soule of the Merrell-Soule Company mentioned here and here. This article mentioned the demise of the salt industry (the occupation listed in the 1850 census for members of the Soule family) in Syracuse and also the Merrell-Soule company.

Oscar Frank Soule, connected to the Merrell-Soule Company, married Dorothy Bigelow and was the father of Frank Canning Soule, according to this bio.

As reported by the Oswego Palladium newspaper, the Last Will & Testament of Frank C. Soule, who died 14 March 1942, at his home in Florida, a retired food manufacturer, was dated 12 January 1939, and included the following:
