Was Eleanor Gibbs' Father Philo or Lester?

There was an Eleanor Gibbs enumerated in the 1860 census in Lapeer County, Michigan:

1860 MI Lapeer Co

Gibbs, Philo, 33 NY

“ Mary Jane, 29, NY

“ Lester, 35, NY

“ Eleanor, 6, b. MI

Next household:

Gibbs, Jason, 63, CT

“, Abigail, 62

One researcher posed the question -- who was Eleanor's father? Was he Philo Gibbs or Lester Gibbs? Philo Gibbs married Mary Jane Perry and Lester Gibbs married Mary Conley according to marriage records. So Eleanor's mother should be named Mary either way. [See my interest in the Perry/Gibbs family here.]

Eleanor (Ella) D. Gibbs was found in the following Lapeer County, Michigan, deed, that I abstracted and was posting to my "People Connected To Lapeer Co. MI " database at Rootsweb's WorldConnect:

Lapeer Co., MI, Deeds
Liber "S", Page 267
Recorded: 31 Dec 1868
Made: 18 Dec 1868
Ella D. Gibbs, By Guardian (Mary Hilliker)
Mortimer Hilliker, Metamora
Between Mary Hilliker, Metamora, Special Guardian of Ella D. Gibbs, an Infant under 21...Mary Hilliker, mother of Ella Gibbs, appointed guardian 4 Dec 1868
W 1/2 of E 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 6 Town 6 North Range 9 East, Lapeer

Marriage records indicated that Lester Gibbs & Mortimer Hilliker married the same woman, Mary Conley, so the deed provided evidence of Eleanor Gibb's parentage - Lester Gibbs & Mary Conley.

In the 1870 census (Lapeer Co., MI) Eleanor Gibbs is age 16, married to John Wortman (in August according to the census) and living between her mother, Mary Hilliker, and her grandmother, Abigail Gibbs. Living with Mortimer & Mary Hilliker are Harriet, age 8 and Albert, age 6, who were the children of Charles & Mary (Conley) Garner but enumerated as Hilliker rather than Garner , and Lillian Hilliker, age 1.

An obituary for Ann Wortman, daughter of John & Eleanor (Gibbs) Wortman, can be found here, where Ann's mother, Eleanor, is listed as Mrs. Hand. In the 1880 census, Eleanor (Gibbs) Wortman Hand can be found with her husband, John Hand, in Lapeer County, and with children Melvin, Anna, and John H. Hand.

Eleanor (Gibbs) Wortman Hand is probably buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Fenton, Genesee Co., MI, with a probable date of death as 1914 according to this entry found in Genesee County death records: HAND ELMA D. F 08/18/1914 V4 125 37.
