What Is A Sasine?

The National Archives of Scotland has a "Guide To The Register Of Sasines," a portion is excerpted below:
What is a sasine and what information does it contain? An instrument of sasine (pronounced 'say-zin') is a legal document that records the transfer of ownership (usually a sale or an inheritance) of a piece of land or of a building.

How many people had sasines? Very few. This record is essentially about the 'haves' of Scottish society rather than the 'have nots'. 


An example of an Instrument of Sasine was found in a transcription of The Binns Papers (Binns was the seat of the Dalyell family in Scotland):
