John Willett died in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan, on 22 June 1881 (and buried in Glenwood Cemetery).

John Leverett Willett married Rebecca Crapo Durant, who was the granddaughter of Governor Crapo. Rebecca was the sister of William Crapo Durant, who was the founder of General Motors. John Leverett Willett is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Flint, Michigan, as is his father.
