Ohio Company Plat Maps And James Backus's Field Notes

Ohio Company Plat Maps are found online at the Marietta College, Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio, site as are the James Backus' Field Notes.

Ohio Company Plat Maps
Author: Ohio Company (1786-1796)
Description: First page is "Map of the Ohio Company's Purchase," showing ranges and townships, major settlements, and waterways. Individual township maps follow, accompanied by names of original proprietors. The last section of the book contains maps of Donation lands allotments.

Backus, James, 1764-1816
Description: James Backus, owner of one share in the Ohio Company of Associates, came to Marietta Ohio, from Connecticut in late May, 1788, less than two months after the arrival of the first settlers. He assisted in the division of lots, cleared lands, helped build a house, served as deputy sheriff, and kept a journal. From May to September, 1789, he recorded the earliest survey of parts of the Ohio Company's land located in federal survey ranges 12-17. This document, four small books tied into one, contains his field notes. He returned to Connecticut in 1791.

James Backus and I are descendants of William Backus the original immigrant.
