"Upon William Scott fell the mantle of his father's [James Scott's] usefulness and influence. William Scott was born July 18, 1790, in Mount Bethel, Northampton county, Pa., coming with his father to Sparta, as before stated, in 1806."
"In 1814, he became foreman in the cloth dressing establishment of Benjamin Hungerford... . At this place began his acquaintance with Millard Fillmore, afterward president of the United States, who had come here to learn the wool carding business."
