"On the 1660 Castello map, Whitehall stands out by its white roof and extensive garden."
Paulus Richard was of French descent; his father residing in France, but was concerned in some commercial relations with Holland, which induced the settlement of his son in this colony. He came here but a short time previous to the period to which we now refer. His premises were near the corner of Whitehall street. The property was afterward, (1667) purchased by him of the owner, Mr. Steenwyck, containing about twenty feet in front and sixty feet in depth. He subsequently purchased property in Broadway, where he lived to an advanced age, and died a wealthy man. His son Stephen became a prominent merchant, and married a daughter of Johannes Van Brugh. Paul Richard, a descendant, was mayor in 1735. [Source]
