"The settlement of this region by whites was effected by the agents of Fernando de la Maza Arredondo, an enterprising Spanish merchant of Havana. Messrs. Dexter and Wanton, under his authority, and led by the accounts given by Indians of the high rolling lands, rich soil, heavy forests, and abundant lakes and streams, penetrated to the vicinity of Gainesville and there established a trading post. The Indian accounts proved true, and Arredondo obtained a Spanish grant of about 289,645 English acres--rather more than one quarter of the present county of Alachua. The exact date of the original settlement cannot be ascertained... ."
