"I have already noted that 6 out of 10 of the inhabitants, were natives of the United States, or their children born in Canada. These people did not move to the province because they preferred the government of Great Britain to that of the United States, but in order to obtain land upon easy terms, for it must be remembered, that all the land of Canada now inhabited, was given to the people by the King, who bought it of the Indians."*
*At present there is a small consideration required, and should this land be sold at any time to any person, such person must take the oath of allegiance within one year, or the land falls back to the King.
