Deeds - What Are They Good For...

From an Ohio Back To History tutorial:

"Deeds are legal records of land ownership and transfer."
"They are widely used by historians and genealogists seeking to establish land use, familial relationships and migration patterns. In some cases, deeds allow researchers to reconstruct entire neighborhoods and towns."

This site also has a very nice section about interpreting deeds and breaks down the various parts of a deed.
