Smiths & Stewarts of Tennessee & Missouri

The following research began as I was thumbing through the pages of Franklin County, Tennessee, Deed Book "11" and noticed that the information on Page "95" had been notarized in St. Louis, Missouri and the surname was "Smith." Thinking this might be the "needle in a haystack" information for someone, I took a few notes.

Franklin Co., TN, Deeds
Liber "11", Page "95"
Dated: 22 November 1884
Samuel Smith Will
Witnesses: William Black, Alice Knotzer, Alphonos C. Stewart
Wife: Margaret Smith
Daughter: Elizabeth Stewart, wife of A. Stewart
Notarized: In St. Louis, Missouri

Since document 11-95 originated in 1884, I started looking for some of the involved persons in the 1880 Census (and found them twice!):

1880 MO St. Louis
Al C. STEWART Self M Male W 33 TN Lawyer TN TN
Elizabeth STEWART Wife M Female W 30 TN Keeping House TN TN
Smith STEWART Son S Male W 7 TN At School TN TN
Hattie STEWART Dau S Female W 5 TN TN TN
Pele HENDERSON Other S Female W 20 PA Servant PA PA
Alice KROLYNS Other S Female W 14 PA At School PA PA

1880 MO St. Louis
Susan SMITH Self W Female W 50 VA Keeping House VA MA
A. S. STEWART SonL M Male W 33 TN Lawyer TN TN
Ada STEWART Dau M Female W 30 TN TN VA
Smith STEWART GSon S Male W 7 TN At School TN TN
Hattie STEWART GDau S Female W 5 TN At School TN TN
Alice KROPZER Other S Female W 14 PA At School PA PA
Belle HENDERSON Other S Female W 20 MO Servant MO IRELAND

[Alice's unusual surname helped identify the Stewarts, as did the name "Smith Stewart", and the TN birthplace, as well as the other pieces fitting together -- except for "Susan Smith" -- was she the same person as Margaret, wife of Samuel Smith, per the Will in 11-95, and assuming "Ada" Stewart is "Elizabeth" Stewart, per the Will.]

Where was Samuel Smith in 1880? Was he already dead and Document #11-95, dated in 1884, was part of the estate settlement in Franklin Co., TN, not when the Will was made? I didn't extract enough information to make that determination.

Death records were found for both Alphonso Stewart and his wife, Elizabeth (Smith) Stewart, through the Missouri Secretary of State's online death records.

Elizabeth (Smith) Stewart's parents are listed as Samuel Smith (b. TN) and Margaret E. Carr (b. VA) on her death record. She is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.

Alphonso Stewart's parents are listed as Alexander P. Stewart (b. TN) and Unk. Chase (b. CT) on his death record. He is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
