Ackers In Deeds In Livingston Co., NY

Can I use the information extracted from the Livingston County, New York, Index, Grantors, A and B, 1821-1920, in conjunction with New York, Land Records, 1630-1975 Livingston at FamilySearch?  The answer is a resounding YES!

So far, so good; Liber 9 is online:

The deed was found on Page 250 (Image 462) and Image 463

Partial image of 9-250

Another "Acker" deed can be found at Liber/Page 9-85, involving Francis and Permelia Acker (Image 378).

George Rogers Clark's Endeavor

Source

[General George Rogers] Clark's army marched but three miles the first day, and it is understood remained a day or two on the high ground about two miles from the ferry where the first camp was made, making final arrangements for the bold advance against Vincennes.

Fort Sainte Marie In Canada

The drawing and description of Fort St. Marie was found in Notes of sites of Huron villages in the township of Tiny (Simcoe County) ... .

On Christian Island are to be seen the ruins of the second fortified Jesuit mission of Ste Marie and the remains of an extensive Huron village surrounding it. The fort is situated on the picturesque bay in the southeast part of the island and at the east end of the present Ojibway village. Its walls enclosing about quarter of an acre were built of stone and lime.

My ancestor, William Howard, purchased LOT C, East Gore, Township of Grimsby, Lincoln County Ontario, Canada, in 1817.

The information was found in FHC Microfilm #170114, Abstract Index Books, 1798- 1957, Lincoln County (Ontario) Registrar of Deeds and on a page that said Grimsby Reference to the Search Instruments Wherein the Nos. of Lots and Concessions are Omitted Township of Grimsby:

The original patent for this property was from the Crown to William Kitchen on 1 September 1797.

Book #1 for 459 and in pencil 5357 to Fohr? 154 Book 2 (I have no idea what the added info means).  There were 4 entries, including the one in pencil.  On a different page with #13990 on it, also Lot 3 West Gore 2nd R South _ 20 Mile Creek has same information with 10 entries.  The entry before #13990 was #12950 Isaac Waddle to William A. Where to go from here with the above information?  Hopefully the following resources will help.

Deeds In Lapeer Of Cynthia Richmond More Marshall More

Cynthia was my 2nd great-grandmother.  She was the daughter of Thomas P. and Laura (Backus) Richmond.  Cynthia married James More, a native of Scotland, whom she met while still residing in (Livingston County) New York.

According to an 1884 History of Lapeer County, Michigan, [James More] "...was married in 1851 to Miss Cynthia Richmond, of New York, by whom he had six children."  James, my 2nd great-grandfather, died December 26, 1870, in Lapeer County, Michigan.

When Cynthia died in Lapeer County on March 2, 1912, her name was given as Cynthia Moore (More and Moore are used interchangeably). She's buried next to her husband, James More, in the Thornville Cemetery in Lapeer County. She listed as a More in every available Federal census from 1860 to 1910.  Case closed, right?  She never remarried, if she died as a More, right?  WRONG.

For the longest time, I never knew that Cynthia had remarried.  Oh, there were clues.  A plat map listed a Cynthia Marshall in the neighborhood where I expected to find the Mores.  However, after spending many, many hours in the Lapeer County Register of Deeds (primarily looking for clues about Cynthia's parents), I found the "smoking gun."  The evidence was found on Lapeer Co., MI, Deed #49-594.

Lapeer Co., MI, Deeds
49-594
5 April 1882
Cynthia More (formerly Cynthia Marshall)
And
Ward B. More
The Interest of John F. More, heir at law of James More, deceased….
Re: mortgage and/or QC deed 8 Oct 1873

Now it was time to look for a marriage record (this was done a few years ago, the old-fashioned way at the Library of Michigan -- it's online now).

17 July 1873
In Oxford, Oakland Co., MI
Sylvester Marshall, b. Genesee Co., NY
Residence: Attica, Lapeer co., MI
TO
Synthia Moore of Metamora
b. Livingston Co., New York

Cynthia and Sylvester Marshall were both grantors on Deed #51-468:

Lapeer County, Michigan, Deeds
51-468
R: 5 Feby 1877
M: 29 Aug 1874
S. P. Marshall and wife
Sylvester P. Marshall and Synthia, his wife, of Lapeer
And
Elizabeth Bryce of Maple Valley, Sanilac Co., MI
SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Section One in Twp 9 N of R 12 E
40 acres
Signed:
Sylvester P. Marshall
Cynthia Marshall
29 August 1874
Witnesses: Wm Worth and Ellen Marshall

Corroboration: On the 1894 MI Census, Lapeer County, Cynthia More was living with her son, James, d-i-l, Rosa, and  granddaughter, Maudie.  Cynthia More was 64 years old and "divorced."

Here's more information about ex step-great-grandfather Sylvester Marshall; Sylvester as an heir of Josiah Marshall and something about Marshall's mother's heritage.

Kaskaskia Versus The Mississippi River

Kaskaskia lost...

The red dotted lines represent the present course of the Mississippi River.  The small darker yellow block represents the village of Kaskaskia.  The Kaskaskia River is a tributary to the Mississippi.

Kaskaskia, the first capitol of the State of Illinois, was destroyed by Mother Nature in the form of the Mississippi River:
Forsaken by the legislature, Kaskaskia was not forsaken by the rivers between which its founders had located it. Gradually these encroached upon the site. Finally floods threatened to make Kaskaskia an island, the Mississippi reaching across the neck above the town to the Kaskaskia (or Okaw, as the river came to be called, because of the French way of saying that they were going aux Kan, to Kaskaskia). [Source]

Before Kaskaskia was the Illinois capitol, it was George Rogers Clark's strategic military objective.

Here's a New York Times article about present day Kaskaskia, Illinois.

A Free Black In Butler's Rangers

From the Upper Canada Land Petitions:

C-2192
Bundle M-3
Petition 47

The petition of Peter Martin, a Free Negro,... and his brother Richard Martin served in Col. Butler's rangers...four years and a half....discharged at the peace of 1783...soon after which Richard died, leaving a family...that your petitioner has received the military lands

Niagara
20 August 1797

Also as an abstract here.

From this site:
Upper Canada's African-Canadian population was a mixture of free veterans who were granted land for their military services and a larger number of slaves who were without rights and freedom. The initiative taken to change this [slavery] came from an African-Canadian named Peter Martin
