Hugh Holmes, joined the British in 1782...has a large family, annually augmenting, and has not yet partook of His Majesty's Bounty in receiving lands...supplicates your Excellency to grant him Five Hundred acres of land on some part of the River Thames...Hugh Holmes



"His grandfather, Hugh Holmes, was one of the area's earliest citizens. As early as 1790, this former Irish sailor was listed as a farmer and school master in Dover East and four years later had purchased a larger tract of land, Lot #23, in Harwich Township.  Hugh Holmes had three daughters and four sons... ."
